Move a downloaded video from Files to Photos on iPhone

If you downloaded a video in Safari but cannot see it in Photos, the file is usually in the Files app. This guide does one job: find that completed download, open the iPhone Share sheet, and choose Save Video so it appears in Photos (often called the Camera Roll).

Start here only after a real file has downloaded. Playing a video in a browser tab does not put a copy in Files or Photos.

Where Safari downloads go on iPhone

Safari normally saves downloads in a Downloads folder under either iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. A custom folder is also possible when the setting is Other. Tap Safari’s Downloads button (the down arrow) to see recent transfers. Wait until the progress indicator finishes before opening the file.

To check the selected folder, open Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads on recent iOS versions. On earlier versions, use Settings → Safari → Downloads. Changing this setting affects future downloads; it does not move a file that is already stored.

Find the file in Files

  1. Open the Files app.
  2. Tap Browse, then check iCloud Drive → Downloads.
  3. If it is not there, check On My iPhone → Downloads.
  4. If Safari is set to Other, open that custom folder instead.
  5. Sort by date or use Search to find the filename. A completed video may end in .mp4 or .mov.

A progress circle or a file that is still growing means the transfer is incomplete. Keep Safari open long enough for it to finish, then try the next step.

Move the downloaded video from Files to Photos

  1. In Files, tap the completed video to open its preview.
  2. Tap the Share button. You can also touch and hold the file, then choose Share.
  3. Scroll through the Share sheet actions and tap Save Video.
  4. Open Photos and check Library, Recents, or the Videos media type.

If iOS asks whether an app may add to Photos, review the prompt before allowing it. This procedure creates a copy in Photos; the original remains in Files until you delete it yourself.

If Save Video is missing from the Share sheet

The Save Video action appears only when iOS recognizes a finished, compatible video. Check these causes in order:

  • The download is incomplete: return to Safari’s Downloads list and wait for the progress indicator to finish.
  • The container or codec is unsupported: an .mp4 filename alone does not guarantee compatibility. Photos commonly accepts MP4 or MOV files encoded with supported video and audio codecs.
  • The file is not the video: a tiny file, an HTML page, or a shortcut cannot be imported as a video. Preview it in Files and confirm that it actually plays.
  • Storage or access is blocked: confirm that the iPhone has free space. If iOS showed a Photos access prompt earlier, review the relevant app under Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos.

If the file previews in Files but Save Video is still absent, obtain a compatible MP4 or MOV from the source. Renaming the extension does not convert the video.

If Safari only played the clip

A video that opens and plays in Safari is not necessarily downloaded. Return to the page that provided the file and use its real Download action. For a direct file link, touch and hold the link and look for Download Linked File, or use Share → Save to Files when that action is available. Then wait for the transfer and repeat the Files → Photos steps above.

Common failure cases

  • No file in Downloads: check iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, and any custom Other folder, then open Safari’s Downloads list to reveal the actual location.
  • The file has a progress circle: it is not finished; Photos cannot import a partial transfer.
  • The file plays in Files but has no Save Video action: suspect an unsupported codec or container rather than the folder location.
  • The video was saved but looks missing: check Photos → Library, Recents, and the Videos media type. Media metadata can affect where an item appears.
